NDS Communities of Practice

Who are the 30 Mob?

Thanks to some seed-funding from Disability Services Queensland, in the lead-up to our Communities of Practice Conference in October, NDS brought together service managers and coordinators from thirty small disability organisations from across the state.

The people who came together had an overwhelming passion and commitment to respond to the needs of people with disability - as was their desire to be better connected to each other, and to share their knowledge and resources.

Within a short space of time the group who had come from every region of the state, had generously shared their concerns and hopes for the future, and created an identity for themselves as The 30 Mob.

To support this emerging community of practice, NDS has created this online space for their community and electronic resource sharing.

Resources and contributions

The willingness and capacity for our communities of practice to share information and resources is indispensible.

Despite our apparent differences and divisive external forces (such as competitive tendering), community-managed disability organisations continue to find strength in solidarity and their ability to share.

The 30 Mob have unearthed following resources:

  1. A complaints and disputes policy from Kingfisher Adult Learning Programs Inc
  2. A governance presentation handout from Ken Leigh
  3. The NDS Key Issues update from October 2008
  4. Images to Keep You Awake at Night from Cartoonist, Simon McLean

Service Managers Development Activity

Early in 2009, NDS partnered with the Department of Education and Training's Disability Services Skilling Plan to develop a tailored, service manager development program for the 30 Mob.

The program we developed (Service Managers Development Activity — 30 Mob) is heavily customised to reflect the requirements of the Disability Sector Quality System, and ensures that all assessment activity is grounded in the day to day work of service delivery.

There are three units of competency being used in the activity, which have been drawn from the new Community Services Training Package and could aid in attaining full qualifications, should members of the group choose to do so.

The 30 Mob's Service Managers Development Activity kicked off last week and offered participants a chance to:

  • meet fact-to-face;
  • be introduced to the program and program mentors;
  • collaborate and form partnerships throughout the state; and
  • find new ways of working together that strengthen service delivery.
