The Economic Contribution to Queensland from Disability Service Providers

While it is broadly acknowledged that community managed disability service providers make an invaluable contribution to the Queensland economy, very little data exists to quantify that contribution.

To support the disability sector with data on its contribution to the Queensland economy, NDS has produced The Economic Contribution to Queensland from Disability Service Providers, which is available in PDF (or a plain text version in Word).

About this report

While it is broadly acknowledged that community managed service providers make an invaluable contribution to the Queensland economy, very little data exists to quantify that contribution. The lack of hard data has limited the ability of the sector to promote itself as an essential contributor to the fabric of Queensland communities. This report seeks to remedy that situation.

In 2009 NDS Queensland asked all funded services to compete a survey which provided information about:

  • staffing;
  • expenditure;
  • revenue sources; and
  • volunteer.

A total of 93 organisations responded to the request.  The organisations that responded to the survey included Disability Employment Network organisations and are considered to reflect the overall mixture of service types and sizes in Queensland’s disability service sector.

The survey was undertaken between September and November 2009. During this period, NDS worked closely with QUT to ensure that the methodology employed would provide a solid basis to estimate statewide figures.

The report estimates sources of revenue for community managed disability service providers to be:

  • 55.26% from the State Government
  • 27.97% from the Federal Government
  • 0.03% from Local Government; and
  • 16.74% from self-raised funds and other sources.

The report also estimates that Queensland's community managed disability organisations employ more than 19,500 staff and contribute $2.8 billion to the Queensland economy.

In addition, of those survey respondents who provided information on their volunteers, 79% of volunteer contribution was associated with service support.  This adds significantly to the non-government contribution to service delivery in the State of Queensland.
