National Workforce Project Overview

Phase one of the NDS National Workforce project (2007/08) focused on building an understanding of the disability workforce in the broader Australian labour market context.  Through the development and delivery of a basic awareness raising workshop, disability organisations in every state and territory have had the opportunity to start exploring, in their own workplace, what this means for their own sustainability.

The project is now well into its second phase (08/09) with 13 pilot sites across Australia trialling a range of strategies for addressing the workforce challenges they are experiencing.

Pilot sites chose to address a range of issues, from high turnover, to gender and age profile mix, to the challenges associated with rapid service growth. Most pilots include strategies to strengthen relationships with local training providers, better engage staff and other stakeholders, and review current job descriptions and working arrangements. Job design is also a key focus of attention and will remain so for the remainder of the project.

Pilot progress is being tracked using the Most Significant Change evaluation methodology, which involves gathering stories of change from multiple stakeholders from the pilot project teams, at three points in time. Rounds One, Two and Three of the Most Significant Change interviews are now available for download.

An introduction to the pilot sites, the focus of their work and a range of workforce related resources are also available for download.
