Queensland Projects
Queensland offices
NDS has two Queensland offices (one in Brisbane and the other in Townsville).
In addition to supporting members and conducting a range of sector development activities, NDS Queensland regularly meet with ministers and advisers from Disability Services Queensland, Treasury, and the Department of Education, Training and the Arts (DETA).
NDS Queensland also participates in the bimonthly Non-Government Organisation/Disability Services Queensland (NGO/DSQ) Partnership Forum, hosted by the Director-General Department of Communities and Disability Services Queensland.
Last year, NDS Queensland initiated Disability Service Plan workshops with a range of key stakeholders and policy officers from every state government department, held member forums with invited guests from DSQ to influence key areas of policy reform, and participated in numerous government reference groups, roundtables, and policy review activities.
The small increases to community managed disability service providers in the 2007/08 and 2008/09 budgets have failed to cover the rising costs of service delivery. The capacity to attract and retain appropriately qualified staff is emerging as a major challenge to sustainability for the non-government sector. NDS Queensland is currently providing strong representation on behalf of its membership on this issue.

The Team
State Manager, Valmae Rose
Valmae Rose has worked in the Disability sector since 1983, starting as an Occupational Therapist in a range of government and non-government agencies, primarily with children with disability. From 1994, Valmae worked across Queensland, NSW, and the Northern Territory with a private training and consultancy agency. She was involved in the development and delivery of curriculum to disability organisations, the establishment of competency based wage systems and a range of service evaluation and organisational development projects. Valmae has served NDS members since June 2003 and maintains a firm commitment to creating a public policy environment that supports the work of services providers in providing quality services to people with disabilities.
